Sources
- FCC Section 214 discontinuance filings: requests by carriers to stop offering traditional landline (POTS) service in an area.
- Copper retirement notices (47 CFR 51.333): carrier notices that the copper network serving a central office will be removed.
- State utility commission filings: state-level notices, some of which name a state but not specific central offices.
Carriers covered: AT&T, Verizon, Frontier, Lumen/CenturyLink, Windstream, Consolidated, altafiber and Hawaiian Telcom. Each listing links to the original notice.
How ZIP codes are matched
- Exact: the ZIP appears in the carrier’s own address list.
- Community: the central office (wire center) serves that town. Its boundary does not follow ZIP lines, so not every address in the ZIP may be affected.
- Approximate: the nearest ZIP to the central office.
What the dates mean
Dates are “on or after.” A line can be shut off on that date or any time later. Some filings are still pending approval and dates can move.
Not on the list?
That is not a guarantee. Carriers file new notices every week and can give as little as 90 days’ notice. Sign up for a ZIP alert to hear about changes.
